Issue #2
Hey there,
If you’re anything like most folks just getting started on the path to tiny living, one of the first questions that pops up is:
What kind of layout can I actually
fit into 400 square feet—or less?
It’s a valid question. The answer? A lot more than you might think.
In today’s issue, I’m walking you through what makes a great tiny house floor plan, what to look for (and what to avoid), and we’ll even share some of my favorite free downloadable plans to get your wheels turning.
But first, here’s something you can do right now…

🛠️ Tip of the Week
Print out a few layouts and walk them with tape on your floor.
You can use painter’s tape to map out a 20x8 ft space in your living room or garage. Then walk through your “tiny home.” Where’s the kitchen? The bed? Can you picture living in it? This one simple step helps a lot when choosing the right layout.

If you’re done thinking about going tiny and your ready to step into a more peaceful way of life, we’re ready to invite you to come live in the Rio Grande Estates Tiny Home Community here in The Land of Enchantment, New Mexico. Bring your off-grid ready tiny home on wheels or come live in one of our cozy container homes. Send us an email and tell us a little bit about where you are on your tiny living journey and we’ll work with you to make tiny home living a reality for you. 💡 What Makes a Great Tiny House Floor Plans
When you’re working with 400 square feet or less, every inch counts—literally. A well-designed layout will give you room to breathe, move, and live fully without feeling cramped.
Here are four essentials I recommend looking for:
1. Defined Zones
Even in a tiny space, your home should have clear areas for sleeping, eating, cooking, and relaxing. Open concepts are great, but if everything blends together, it can start to feel cluttered fast.
2. Smart Storage
Look for built-in shelves, stairs with drawers, and furniture that doubles as storage (like a bench with a lid or a bed with deep pull-out drawers). You’ll thank yourself every day.
3. Natural Light
Big windows make a huge difference. The more natural light you bring in, the larger and more inviting your space will feel—even if it’s less than 300 square feet.
4. Loft or No Loft?
Some people love sleeping in lofts—others, not so much. If you're not comfortable climbing a ladder daily, look for layouts with a main-floor bedroom or convertible bed/sofa options.
To making the most of your space.
